We here at the Double Noggin Knocker are pretty fortunate to have some friends who are pro wrestlers. Those friends also happen to listen to some pretty rad music. So you can imagine how pumped we were when they agreed to do a Best of 2011 list for us. We’ll be posting a full list all this week including Pat & Tim’s. Starting off the week is former WWE Tough Enough contestant, independent wrestler extraordinare, world traveler and punk rocker – “MDogg” Matt Cross. We hope you enjoy and stay tuned for more! Without further Apu, here’s Matt’s list.

Top Albums of 2011

Though mostly known for my accomplishments inside the squared circle, I first heard Sound System by Operation Ivy in ’95 (or was that ’96??) and it quite literally changed my life. At that moment, all music I’d ever heard before died. I saw the Ramones in 1996 (at Lollapalooza) and the Sex Pistols that same year and the deal was sealed. I was absolutely hooked and I’ve been an avid supporter of punk rock since that first spin of Op Ivy. In no particular order, here are my top albums of 2011. I hope you’ve enjoyed this musical year as much as I have and I’d love to hear your thoughts! www.twitter.com/mdoggmattcross

Andrew Jackson Jihad -Knife Man

Andrew Jackson Jihad is a band that has really captured my attention and imagination over the past 4-5 years. They present a duality that really resonates with me. Equal parts hopeful and suicidally negative, their sound is a contradiction of sorts. Often, uptempo cheery sounding songs are balanced out with cripplingly violent or depressing lyrics. This counterintuitive combination has had me coming back for years and though based in Cleveland, Ohio I’ve traveled to Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Chicago to catch them live. Though not necessarily representative of their sound, the song “Back Pack” is hauntingly beautiful. If the opening track’s title, “The Michael Jordan of Drunk Driving” doesn’t make you want to at least give this album a shot, I don’t know what would.

Star Fucking Hipsters -From the Dumpster to the GraveBeing STF’s third album I was very curious what direction the band would take. As a huge fan of Stza’s previous bands Choking Victim, and Leftover Crack, I’ve always been drawn to his patented, “Crack Rocksteady” sound. I felt the second Star Fucking Hipsters album left a little to be desired so I was ecstatic when I was able to instantly, enthusiastically embrace this entire disc. From the intro on, I was hooked. If you’re into any of Stza’s previous bands you won’t be disappointed here. There’s a marked return to a more ska influenced sound and the unique, catchy, contradictory blend that Stza has almost single-handedly created. The title track is just one of the gems on this release.

OFF! – First Four EP’s

This album starts out with an explosion and never loses steam. With 16 songs in just 17 and a half minutes it’s a pretty blistering ride. Recorded with a somewhat vintage sound, fans of old school Black Flag (from which OFF! singer Keith Morris first made his name) will be screaming along in no time. The track, “Darkness” is a must hear.

Dead to Me- Moscow Penny Ante

I feel as the years go by it becomes increasingly difficult to encounter something unique without the punk rock subculture. All too often, a new band will sound so similar to an already established band that it makes it difficult to get truly enthusiastic about what they’re doing. In a style of music known for 2 minute songs, often comprised of three chords, it’s quite hard to develop your own sound nowadays. With that said, I feel Dead to Me has done a terrific job of carving out their very own piece of the punk rock pie by keeping things interesting, varied, and cautiously experimental. With many, well documented, line-up changes over the years it was tough to know what this third disc would bring to the table and I’m happy to report it rests nicely against their previous body of work. Hard to nail down, they innovate, and yet still tie everything together with a distinct ‘Dead to Me’ sound. I feel like the album’s last track, “The World has Gone Mad” is worth searching out.

Nothington- Borrowed Time

Solid entry from a band that I feel deserves more recognition. Not quite up to par with their stellar debut album (simply because they set the bar so astronomically high), this disc certainly holds its own. Absolute masters of the catchy chorus that begs to be sung along to, surrounded by friends, soaked in sweat, as you lose your voice. I also have a huge soft spot in my heart for Jay’s gruff, desperate vocals.

Nick 13- Self Titled

Making his name in the psychobilly powerhouse that is Tiger Army, Nick 13, in his first solo release, goes all in on a sound only hinted at in previous Tiger Army releases. This album doesn’t quite fit with my other picks (as a pure country/Americana disc), but I have to admit it got a surprising amount of play from me this year. By this point there is no denying that ‘country punk’ is coming into its own with more and more established punk names entering the fold (Mike Herrera of MXPX and Tim Barry formerly of Avail instantly come to mind). Whether it’s a fad, a genuine attempt to capture a stripped down punk ethos (ala early Against Me!), or something else completely different remains to be seen. Fans of Tiger Army tracks, “In the Orchard”, and especially “Outlaw Heart” will have a good idea what to expect here. The tracks, “101″, and “Someday” really stand out to me.

Marvez: Matt Cross still eyes WWE despite ‘Tough Enough’ ouster

Submitted by SHNS on Thu, 12/01/2011 – 12:40

Reality television was a surreal experience for Matt “M-Dogg 20″ Cross.

He is charismatic, articulate and athletically gifted. He also was the most seasoned pro wrestler to participate in the “Tough Enough” competition for aspiring WWE stars earlier this year.

Unfortunately for Cross, those positive traits weren’t evident on the show. He was the second competitor eliminated, being booted in dramatic fashion by “Tough Enough” host “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Cross, though, hasn’t abandoned his WWE dream. He wrestled another WWE tryout match in September and maintains a full schedule of dates for independent promotions in the U.S. and internationally.

“I’m in a great place right now,” Cross said Tuesday in a telephone interview. “I’ve kept in touch with all the (‘Tough Enough’) trainers and gotten really positive feedback to the point that I’m even surprised how helpful they’ve been post-show. Obviously, ‘Tough Enough’ provided a lot of exposure. Maybe it has even translated into getting me booked more places.”

Not that Cross needed much help in that regard. The Cleveland native has wrestled in 16 different countries and for smaller U.S. grappling companies like Ring of Honor and Chikara. That helped put Cross on the WWE radar. His first tryout match came in August 2010.

Instead of landing a WWE contract, Cross was offered a chance to try and earn one by joining the “Tough Enough” cast. That was an odd WWE decision, considering the show has traditionally featured far less experienced performers who are trying to gain a foothold in the grappling game.

Even more curious: Cross didn’t get much of a chance to showcase the high-flying style that landed him on “Tough Enough.” While his lone televised match against Luke Robinson was disappointing, Cross thought the overall quality of the other performers and his previous body of work should have resulted in another chance to shine.

Critics have claimed that Cross was targeted because, at 5-feet-7 and 180 pounds, he doesn’t have the kind of size that WWE wanted in the “Tough Enough” champion. Andy Leavine — a muscular 6-5, 270-pound former college offensive lineman — was the ultimate winner.

WWE also has a history of looking with disfavor on grapplers who didn’t learn the ropes through the company’s developmental system. C.M. Punk — a longtime Cross contemporary and friend from the independent scene — and Daniel Bryan initially had their pasts work against them. Punk and Bryan were booked poorly by WWE scriptwriters until convincing management that they belonged in the upper echelon of the talent roster.

Cross believes that neither of those considerations led to his “Tough Enough” ouster. Cross simply allows he didn’t come across well in “Tough Enough’s” made-for-television environment.

“Once I was on the show, I thought the rest would take care of itself because I know what I bring to the table,” said Cross, whose real name is Matt Capiccioni. “It’s funny to me that when the show was being filmed, I had no inclination that I would be portrayed as a wet blanket. Some people told me I was the most entertaining guy in the house (where ‘Tough Enough’ competitors stayed). But when I watched how the shows turned out, I was like, ‘Wow! I’m the boring guy.’ ”

Cross said he still can’t decide whether “Tough Enough” was a positive or negative experience.

“Something like 5 million people a week tuned in, which is amazing exposure,” he said. “On the other hand, it painted me in such a strange light. It really did a disservice to me as a wrestler. They didn’t get a glimpse of who I am and what I do.”

Cross didn’t let the experience sour him. He already is booked for upcoming matches in Mexico and Hungary as well as the U.S.

One of Cross’ goals is wrestling in 20 different countries. He hopes to hit that milestone in WWE.

“I’ve got to be positive,” said Cross, 30. “I’ve gotten to do so many cool things because of wrestling.”

Cross will be appearing Dec. 17 on the PWO Wrestling Internet pay-per-view show emanating from Parma, Ohio. Also booked for the show is Gregory Iron, who continues to gain national media attention for overcoming cerebral palsy to wrestle. Iron is petitioning to get his own WWE shot at the upcoming “Royal Rumble” pay-per-view through a viral Internet campaign and online petition.

As reported by the Wrestling Press Online (http://thewrestlingpress.com/?p=6633), and countless other pro wrestling websites early last month…

“WWE puts squeeze on rock band: The licensing arm of WWE recently sent a legal letter to alternative rock band ‘If I Had A HiFi’ over a song called “Somebody Take The Damn Money.” The song is based on the 1983 feud in the Carolinas where Harley Race put up a $25,000 bounty for anyone who could take out Ric Flair. WWE is claiming copyright infringement as the song features audio samples of Race cutting his famous promo. The song was to be including on the bands forthcoming EP titled Nada Surf (not to be confused with the band of same name), but now the project has been delayed while they re-cut the audio track. WWE has owned the NWA video library since the purchase of WCW in 2001.”

In an interesting follow-up to this story, while wrestling for Milwaukee based Mondo Lucha (www.mondolucha.com) last month, I was made aware of this situation and approached by ‘If I Had a HiFi’ with their dilemma. An absolute music junkie for well over the past 15 years, I was instantly interested in the unique experience of helping the band out with vocal duties and having the chance to be on their album. To add a personal anecdote, I first crossed paths with Harley Race several years ago when he was brought in by my late trainer, Jt Lightning (RIP), to make an appearance at a large Cleveland All Pro Wrestling anniversary show. After watching me take on my close friend, and long time rival Josh Prohibition, Harley Race pulled me aside and said to me, “that’s as good as it gets”. I was really taken aback and it’s something I’ll never forget. It was with that moment in mind that I channeled my inner Harley Race to help lay down the track, “Somebody Take the Damn Money”.
